Service Description
A 5-week hands-on STEM unit for 3rd graders exploring habitats, survival traits, food webs, and environmental change through field-style inquiry, model-building, and design challenges. COURSE DESCRIPTION The Animal Adaptations unit invites 3rd graders to think like naturalists and scientists as they explore the incredible ways animals are built for survival. Over five weeks, students investigate physical traits, behavioral strategies, and ecosystem relationships that allow animals to thrive — or struggle — in their environments. Students engage in hands-on labs, creative design challenges, and real-world case studies. They sketch and label in nature science journals, debate conservation solutions, build 3D food webs, and design their own imaginary species. The unit culminates in a Naturalist Showcase where each student presents a self-chosen project connecting all five weeks of learning. BIG IDEAS Adaptations: Traits help animals survive in specific environments Camouflage: Hiding and trickery are powerful survival strategies Form & Function: Body structures are shaped by survival needs Ecosystems: All living things are connected in food webs Conservation: Human choices affect which animals can survive STANDARDS AT A GLANCE: 3-LS2-1 : Group behavior helps animals survive 3-LS3-1 : Offspring inherit traits from parents 3-LS3-2 : Environment can influence traits 3-LS4-2 : Environment supports or challenges organisms 3-LS4-3 : Some environments suit some organisms better 3-LS4-4 : Propose solutions to environmental change 3-5-ETS1-1 : Define design problems with success criteria
