STEM Builders (UNIT 1)
Forces, Motion & Engineering

Service Description
COURSE DESCRIPTION The Forces, Motion & Engineering unit invites 3rd graders to think, build, and discover like real engineers. Over five weeks, students explore the invisible forces that shape our physical world — gravity, friction, magnetism, and more — through hands-on investigations, collaborative building challenges, and structured scientific inquiry. Every session follows the engineering design process: students predict, investigate, build, test, and improve. Science journals are used each week to document observations and reflect on learning. The unit culminates in a student-choice engineering showcase where learners apply all five weeks of knowledge to design and present an original project. BIG IDEAS Forces: Pushes and pulls cause objects to move or stay still Gravity & Friction: Invisible forces act on every object around us Balanced Forces: Equal forces = no change in motion Engineering Design: Define → Plan → Build → Test → Improve Iteration: Failure is data — redesigning is engineering. STANDARDS AT A GLANCE 3-PS2-1 Investigate balanced/unbalanced forces on motion 3-PS2-2 Measure & produce data to explain forces 3-PS2-3 Explore electric/magnetic non-contact forces 3-PS2-4 Propose solutions involving forces 3-5-ETS1-1 Define design problems with success criteria 3-5-ETS1-2 Compare solutions based on criteria 3-5-ETS1-3 Test, identify failure points, and improve
